Production log - week 11

This week me and my partner had began on making our script for our opening sequence of the film that we are going to be making. We talked about the camera type , camera angle, movement , descrption, dialogue , actors and the timing of each of the shots that we are doing. There was not many issues that we faced with writing the planning but we had to make sure that in each camera shot that we wrote a clear description of what is going to happen so it is clear to us when we begin to shoot our film that we are making. To fix this issue we thought about the story line very carefully making sure we added everything that was taking place in the shot. Also we had to make sure that we changed the shot about using a range of shots. We decided to use close ups to show the emotions for the main characters face as thought that was the most effective shot for this. We also had to make sure that all of our shots timing was reasonable and did not have a duration that lasted for a long time. The music that we thought of we ahd to think of the timing to the music will start and stop to make the opening sequence more intense for the viewers to see. Us planning our script will make us more organised for when we start to film, making it a lot easier for us to do We then recieved detail of what we should add in our script and what we should not include for example we should make sure that our script is in detail and to spend time on the finer detail of my work like props, music and camera directions. The thing that we should not is that we should not rush our work and we should not copy and paste our work. Overall I think that we have done that successfully and as a group are doing the things we are ment to be doing.

Production log - week 10

This week me and my partner Delon have created a Vox pop video asking the audience questions relating to our film , 'Choice'. This have us a better idea of how to make our film and we got some good ideas from the audience that we asked. From the primary research we asked people what did they think of our film. They gave us feedback why they liked it and feedback on how to make our film better to fit our target audience. Also we asked questions like what themes should we include so that knew what the audience liked to see making our film suitable for them. Asking them questions like do you think that the working class is neglected in society made us realise what we need to include in our film to show this as the actors in our film are from the working class. As they rather see a gritty version of the film and not a varnished version shows that the audience would like to see how it really is living it them type of conditions. It has influence our planning by making us keep it gritty with the area they are living in showing that living in them conditions are not easy. Also they wanted to know more about the boys background So I will include that in my film.

Meet My Audience

This is one of my people who are my target audience for the film I am going to make. I found out information about her like who she lives with, how old she is and where she is from. I then talked about what intrest she is into and what she like doing. Then I found out what films she like to watch and how she watches them. She had a range of show that she enjoyed watching and channels that she watched. She had a wide range of music that she was intreasted in spoke about how she downloads them.

Vox Pop

Results:

What ideas would you like to be included in our film? - People said that they would like to see the police abusing the boy, film the police station, the older brother is involved, make the brother find out, make the gang find out what the boy up to, more back ground of the boy and to find people who have been in difficult situations and see how they felt

What themes would you want in our film? - People would like to see sex , violence but not too much, corruption of youth, action, realistic, no comedy to make it more real, not to much action, don't make it steyotypical

How is this going to help?

By looking at all the results of my work It have helped me and my partner idea develop into something that our target audience is going to like.

The audience said that our story line is realistic but from looking at it we need to make sure that it is not over exaggerated and also people show how it's going to be really hard for the boy to make his choice.

This also helped as I found out that people want the film to be kept gritty. This will show to the audience how it really is for people living in them type of conditions and for it to be kept real.

It had also helped as as they do not to see any comedy tried to be involved withythe film so it would be left realistic. Also themes like violence should be included but there should not be too much violence through the film.

From looking at what people think of the working class society and how they are treated in the everyday life needs to be included in our film also. This is because it brings out more realism and it shows more struggles of the peron. Also it let people know how it feels to be in a position like them.

Finally it has help by them wanting to know more information about who the boy is and what type of boy he is. Also by taking on board the  with the gang finding out with what the police are trying to make the do is a good idea giving the boy a hard life.

Treatment

Target Audience

The target audience for my story line is going to be for teenager around the age of 15 to 25 as I think these are the people who would be able to relate to the story-line better than anyone else. The gender of my target audience would be for boy and girls as these are situations that they both go through. They would be interested in media consumption like action films as that what that age group what the most. Also have an interest in there social life like using social networks like twitter and Facebook as that is a what they interact with their friends. The class of the people would be aimed for working class and lower class as it is showing the struggles that they have to go through in their life and showing that it is not easy. The film would appeal to them as it is going to be a modern film that includes themes like corruption of youth, racism, violence, aspiration and escape as he is trying to get away from all the struggles with his brother and poverty from where he is living in a bad area. Our film would be different from anyone else as it would be realistic for the lower classes and it has a wider target audience to relate to. Also some people from other classes can relate to it as they have to make hard choice like the boy in our film. What’s going to appeal to them is the interaction the audience would have with the young boy to make they feel sorry for him as he goes through his struggles.  The target audience would watch TV shows like Top Boy, Eastenders , family guy, E news and 106& Park. Shows like top boy would show the gritty part of Britain and how the lower class people in them areas are living.

Representation

The key characters in my film are the protagonist in the film which is a thirteen year old guardian less boy. He will be Black Caribbean. This will be so he is stereotyped in the audience mind before they know much about him. Also from the where he lives would make our protagonist seem stereotyped. His attire will consist of clothes like hoddies; jogging bottoms, trainers like air forces this would get a realistic feel of how boy are in bad areas. Our film will challenge some typical representation as the boy is a smart boy at school who does well but he wants to protect his brother from all of the troubles that is happening with him. His teacher in his school want to support him making sure that he does well in school as he is really cleaver unlike some of the people in his area. The antagonist in the film are the police that are trying to black mail the young boy into making choices that he does not what to make. The young boy has to make the choice of helping the police plot his brothers gang for the crimes that they do or they would put the brother away in prison.

Conventions
This film will only contain one genre element in the film which is going to be British Social Realism. If we leave it as that then it is more reliable as it is more real. I will use conventions like a smash mouth opening as it would start off with him running away. This will automatically get the attention of the audience as they would start to think who he is running away from. This then will create enigma as everyone want to know what going on in the film creating mystery. We will make sure that the music in the film is engaging as that would bring attention the start of the film to interact with the audience better. There will be an establishing shot at the start as this will make the audience get a feeling of where the character life and the struggles that he lives in. I would stick to mise-en-scene to make sure that the film is like a British Social Realism. The boy lives in an estate in Barking that is very rundown showing that he is poor and does not have much money and that he is quite poor. The lighting in the film will be natural throughout the film so it would be realistic and it shows the film raw without it being varnished with a unnatural light. The costumes that the boy would be wearing is nothing too fancy like jogging bottoms and trainers with a hoodie. In the house there would only be the basic amount of props to show that the boy and his brother does not have much. The area of my film would include graffiti all on walls and the boy would visit chicken shops to eat to show that he cannot afford any other expensive restaurant as the chicken shop is cheap. The camera would include many close up of the main character , Kaden to show his emotions throughout the film. The camera will be hand held at parts when the boy is running away from the gang of people. For the smash mouth opening I got the inspiration from the film 'Trainspotting' as at the start of the that film you want to know why the two men are running and start into the action.

Institution

The production company for my film is film 4.This will have an impact on my film as film 4 have a big contribution into British Social Realism films. They have made many British Social Realism films like 'Trainspotting' and 'This is England' which are very popular British film that have been made. From these types of films I have got a good inspiration on our film to be good enough for film 4 as the films that they make are up to a high quality and have been successful. Trainspotting has inspired us with the themes that are used in the film and how the start of the film begins with enigma that has built up when people are watch the film. As there parent company are Channel 4 the films will be shown on channel four and film 4.  My film would be distributed on film 4 and cinemas as the film it good and get the audience attention with the story line. It would be exhibited cinemas like Romford Vue for people to come and watch the film. The film would be a low budget film that is not expensive.

Title

The title my partner and I felt was quite fitting and appropriate for our production was 'Choice'. We both felt that our titles had a real sense of ambiguity and connoted to our audience the possibility that multiple themes would be involved in our story as multiple factors would need to be present to allow our protagonist to make choices. Choices is also a relatable title we feel, as it's a gift(sometimes curse) we've all been permitted to have and use, so immediately our audience would think to themselves; with choices, comes both bad and good decisions and wonder what possible decisions could have been made in our film.

I feel that our title is rather conventional for the British Social Realist genre as an enigma is created when seeing this title as to whether the choices made in the film lead to success or failure.

As well as being relatable to the audience, I feel the title would also appeal to our target audience being that our audience would be of an age where the ambiguity would be quite imaginative, and depending on social backgrounds, relative to our story line. The kind of choices some people have to make on a day-to-day basis are at the very end of the spectrum for others. Being that we were aiming towards younger males, a choice of crime or a clean life could be what relates characters to our audience members.

Technology

The technology I intend in using will be of an adequate quality. I don't intend on using the highest quality camera to record my production  as I would like for the scenery and images captured to possess an element of grime/grittiness which would automatically connote poverty and also replicate the way members of the working class society see things. Using this low/average quality technology would also intensify the difficulty my characters are going through as the connotation from the camera not being able to adjust aperture would reflect the lack of hope people in the working class experience. As well as the technology I'll be using to record, certain technologies need too be incorporated in the film. The fact that technology is always advancing in our society and small improvements are being made to products, I would ensure that the tech used in my production would be old products as this would create a clear separation between social classes which would make comprehending the characters situation that little be easier. I'd probably incorporate things like old Nokia phones, PS1 console and games. I feel this technology would be very suitable as it would allow me to imitate the working class lifestyle much more accurately and effectively. Another feature that I would input at certain sections of my film would be the free hand recording, a lot of the time the use of a stand wouldn't be necessary, and with this shaky vibe I would acquire a feeling of being in the scene, running; jumping or walking, with/as the character.

Narrative

Infusing our initial ideas, my partner Delon and I decided our protagonist, Kaden a 13 year old boy, would find himself separated from his passion to learn and be educated, and stuck with a choice. His Brother will be wearing jeans, a shirt and a jacket. This will show his status that he is a higher class. He is the drug supplier and he talks to all of them about stories that happened during the day of some violent act that he had done in  the day. Behind the drug supplier a trashy looking girl that is an addict and rubbing up against the drug supplier once again showing his status. The drug supplier will then start talking about how he wants all the money that everyone owes him from selling the drugs. Chas however doesn't have the money and gets all nervous. He had purposely done this due to the fact he wants to get out of the life he is living. The drug supplier asks him for his money and he runs straight out the door. From here the drug supplier stands up casually with a smile on his face, walks out and pulls out a gun.

Style and Iconography

The will be kept the costumes for the drug dealers to a simple plain tracksuit with trainers and a hat to cover their face. This will signify equality of authority between the drug dealers and will signify the difference to the drug supplier showing he has more respect, due to his wealth and clothes. Also this will signify the drug dealers as low class thugs who commit criminal activities to make money but are just assuming without knowledge of their background. Also the drug supplier, will be using the latest gadgets and expensive jewelry to represent his wealth and social status in comparison tot he drug dealers, who wear cheap clothing and do not carry around much as they have no money and earn a living with selling drugs representing the everyday struggles of their lives. Also another prop I will use will be flour to act as my drugs. This is used to signify a life changing object and also to connote the dangers of the life some have to result in due to their struggle for money. Also this links back to one of the main themes being drugs, and represents the title, being Class A, it connotes drugs which makes the audience think about the consequences of this drug which is what the movie is based on.
In consideration to music, We will like to keep to having our own created soundtrack that fits the genre and themes of the film. Also the music will be flowing accordingly to the shots so it will look professional and the audience will be able to remember the movie and soundtrack and create an association. Also is creates authenticity. We have ideas of slow paced music during tragic scenes and fast paced music during the action scenes. Also the music will represent the movies era and also will signify who the film is targeted at.

Project Log - Week 9

This week I have learnt a lot about the narrative that is in the film. Narratives are about the structure of the text so it is how the story is told. It could be linear narrative which is when a story has a start, middle and end. Example of this could be films like Kes, Fish tank and most British social realism films. Non-liner narrative is where the narrative is not in chronological order and in contains flashbacks. As British Social Realism film that does this is Adulthood as a flashback occurs in the film. I have learnt from this and I will use it as I found out that most British Social Realism film include Liner narrative. Also I learnt about restricted narrative when the film only follows one person and you see event of that one character. An example of this is a film called Kes. We know this because the film was named after him showing that it will follow him Omniscient narrative is when it follows from more that one or more character for example adulthood and Adulthood. This has help me with my treatment work that I done. I then decided with my partner that we was going to do a Restricted narrative film that be about the boy, Kaden.

McKee's 'classic Narrative Structure'

Exposition- Protagonist

The protagonist in my story-line is Kaden. He is a young thirteen year old boy who is guardian less living with just his brother in a run down estate in Barking. He is a student at school but unlike the typical type of boy who lives on the estate he is very smart in school but he seem to hang around with the wrong type of people in his area. When you first see him he is represented as a young boy who is bad person from the area that he lives in. He costume he wears is jogging bottoms or baggy jeans and hoodies with trainers with a hat on his head giving the audience the impression that he is part of a gang or that he is an criminal. He is not interested in drinking alcohol like a lot of people his age as he is smarter then them and know the effects of drinking. He is also represented by the way the places that he goes to like chicken shops as the is cheap to go to and they have no one to cook for them.

Agents of Change- Antagonist

The antagonist in the story-line is a police man named PC Richard and PC Dave. PC Richard is racist toward black people and does not respect them or treat them fairly. PC Dave does not treat anyone of a lower status or class fairly weather they are black or white. If you are on his class or above he would treat you with respect. This is because the people black mail the young boy, Kaden not treating him right and putting him a difficult situation. This show the view of how police treat lower class people and showing the trouble that the young boy is going to have with the police. The police are trying to find out information about Kaden's brother and the gang that he is in and trying to see there acts of crime but if he does not give the information then the police will arrest his brother.

Conflict Complication

Even though Kaden is at school as he has no parents around as his dad recently died and his mum left him he has been getting caught up with stealing items. The young boy have done petty crimes like stealing trainers from stores and taking people phones. This is as he has nothing much himself he does these little crimes showing that he does not have much money as he takes people items.

Elaboration

The themes that will occur in the film are corruption of youth as he grows up living a hard life, racism from the police, poverty as he does not have much money and lives on a estate. Also there would be themes of aspiration and escape, violence and loyalty. The story-line is about a young boy who is running away from a gang trying to escape is how it would start making it a smash mouth opening as it would me shocking to see what is happening. He then escapes and see the police that tried to talk to him before about the police having a plot on how to set up Kaden's brothers gang with the crimes they do but if he deiced not to then they would put his brother away. This then put Kaden in a difficult situation. He then walks into his brothers room and find him wiping a guy staring at it. Kaden then remember what the police said and tears begin to roll down his face. He then goes in his room laying there thinking of what he is going to do. He then looks at a picture of him and his dad before his dad passed away  The character in school is a smart boy and a teacher that he is close with want him to stay out of trouble. He then starts to steal for way to earn money and his brother is up to no good with the gang doing crimes.

Climax & Resolution

After the hard decision that he had to make the police made him feel like he had to help so he helped the police set up the gang with a plot. The police end up with what they was trying to achieve in the first place.

Coda

A couple of month later there could be that the Kaden brother was caught doing the main crime with the gang by killing some one so as the boy told the police about the gang and set a plot it also set up his brother. The boy the ends up having to get taken in care as he has no one else. We decided to do this as it so the realism that happens in real life as there is not always happy ending for everyone.

Project Log - Week 8

This week I have make three initial ideas for my film. I then decided what one i like best and used that one. I then looked at the Themes, Narrative, Location and the protagonist. I then made sure it was a good story line for a British Social Realism. I used typical themes like poverty, violence and neglect. I then made it relate for working class people and the area of my film would be places like Ilford in run down estates and chicken shops. The influence for my film was by watching other British Social Realism films and change the story line to what I thought was a better story line and going against the stereotypical types of things that occur. We looked at films like Looking for Eric. Also we looked at Fish tank to get the theme of aspiration and escape from and where they live in poverty in the film. In my group we have deiced to do Delon's idea and mixed it with a bit of my idea. It includes themes like corruption of youth, poverty, racism and many more. I think that our group would be really good as we have many creative idea's to share and we will push each other to work hard and to keep up with the work that we do. The title of the idea the we have chosen is called choice.
