Evaluation - Part Eight

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The areas that was successful in the digital technology at the start of the scene 0:08 we had clear 180 degree rule that was used successfully through out our encounter. Also the shot reverse shot was very clear as each person spoke the camera reversed back to them. At 0:22 in the encounter then match on action was successful as it flowed without any trouble making that the most successful part of the film.We edited all of our work on the mac using I Movie. I started off struggling with using this as I never edited any film before the encounter. I then found it easier as time went on as I tired to edit it until it was accurate and to make sure that it flowed successfully. On I Movie I included effects like on the jump at 0:26 I made the shot go slow motion adding a more of a agent feel to the encounter. Even though I thought the encounter was successful as there was a range of shots I still believe that there was room for improvements. Part that was less successful was in the digital technology was at 0:59 as the camera as the film film did not flow as we did not film enough to edit it down accurately. If I could do it again I would make film flow through all of the film and not just at the start of the film as it does not flow greatly. Also I would include more sound effect when the is the fight section at 0:52 of them fighting to make it more effective and add music at the start of the scene while the agent is running.

The successful creative parts of the film was that made our encounter unique was that we had to make a storyline of someone entering the room and having a conversation with another character. It had to include the 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and also it had to include match on action when you character walks through the door. To make our story line more unique we made it about agents and change it to be more interesting by making the storyline interesting and making the character running down corridors to fight the bad person. We made sure we added match on action but we included it at 0:22 and 0:29 when the agent is jumping down the stairs. As we also was creative with the wide range of shots that we used like at 0:33 we used a point of view shot when the agent was running to make the audience engage more with the agent while he was running. The less successful parts was that the storyline started off good but after 0:35 it felt as it the story line could of got confusing for the audience and never made it as good as it could of been.

When I came to edit my piece I found out that some of the shots did not flow into the next shot. This would be because the actors would be one was at the end of one shot and then they would move for the other shot. This made it the edit at 0:59 less successful than it could of been as it did not flow greatly. The parts that we found successful in our post production was the match on action as the had a great flow to the match on actor at 0:22 as we done this shot more than once to make sure that it was successful while we had to edit it. In some shot we found out that the start of the dialogue was missing so we had to re film to make sure that it was more precise for the preliminary task.

For the research and planning what was successful as we wrote a clear description in each shot of what is going to happen in each shot. We included what the lighting would be like, the duration of the shot, the shot type, the shot angle, the sound and the setting of where the shot is going to be. This was successful as it made it easy what the shot order was going to be and we looked at each shot making sure that we done it the same as we done it on the planning paper. The setting the we used made sure that we had a natural lighting so that we would not have to include any artificial colours in our encounter. Research that was done was that at 0:15 for the shot reverse shot to get an idea of how that shot is like we looked at many films to get an idea of how films used it. This gave us a clearer understanding making it easier for us when we was filming it. For the encounter we don't not manage time as well as we could of. It seemed that we need more time editing our encounter as I left that till late. The filming time was good as we had enough time to film the mistake that we found while we was editing the film.

For the planing I improved that in my BSR film we made this was easier to understand than my preliminary task as the actor had a clear understand of what they had to do as we wrote the plan in clear detail for the actors to understand what they had to try to achieve in each shot.

For the preliminary task the editing could of been edited to make the encounter look more effective. I believe that the in the British Social Realism film that the editing was more accurate. I also believe that i improve on the camera shots as we used a range of shots in the BSR film making the film engage with the audience more for example at 0:50 in the BSR film we done a close up of the the boy cleaning the knife so it could get the audience attention. For the graphic in the BSR film they had a meaning why we decided to use that colour for the credits and the title to connote that his life is in a struggle. The time management for the BSR film was good as we did not need to rush while we was film or editing or final piece and because of this we make sure that it was more precise.

Evaluation - Part Five

How does you media product represent particular social group?

Typography
The graphic used when the title comes up in the screen is written in black and white. This shows the contrast that is reflecting on the actor and the choice that the actor has to make in the film. The boy Kaden has to make two different choices weather Kaden will decide to go to the police and tell them the situation of what is going on or if he doesn't say anything. This then shows that the graphic when the title comes up shows that he to make a choice with two decision that contrast easy other. The writing on the screen is all chipped up this represent the life of boy, Kaden. As it is chipped it shows that he life is not perfect and feels gritty like a British social realism film.

Camera, angle,hot movement and position
The angle of the shot when Kaden's brother is cleaning the knife when there is a over shoulder shot and the camera is looking down. Kaden's brother face is covered and you do not see his face while cleaning the knife. As the camera angle is a high angle looking over the shoulder this connotes that the audience is looking down on his as he is doing a bad thing and is ashamed of him getting involved with knife crime. This represent the young social group of being violent.

Sound
The dialogue used in the scene included a variety of slang that a young social group would use. "Swear down" this represent the teenage boys as not having the best education as the do not speak high class. This give it a more of a realistic feeling as young teenage boy speak using slang words very often. The music used was a steady pace at the start of the film then as Kaden sat up on the seat the music began to kick in more. This connoted that his life was calm before but as he walks up he goes back to reality of what going wrong in his life.

Mise-en-scene

The setting in the film look like it included lots of violence because at the start of the scene there is an establish shot of police cars all on the road. This sets the scene at the start of the film as it shows the audience that the area that Kaden is living is not a good area as the is trouble that happening in the area. This brings enigma to the start of the film as the audience wonder why there are police cars. The costumes that Kaden was wearing was in all black wearing a Hood. This to the audience makes in feel as Kaden is an intimidating character who wants to start trouble. Even though he wears them clothes Kaden does not want to start trouble as he runs away from the gang in the opening sequence. The lighting that used was natural as this brings a more realistic feeling of how British Social Realism are.

Iconography

The iconography used in the opening sequence was when Kaden brother was cleaning off the knife in the kitchen. This shot is done as a close up to show the audience that this is a significant part of the film that we made. The knife that the brother is cleaning represent the brother by being a criminal. As the knife has blood on it, it shows the character as being a murderer. The knife then is iconic as the audience does not know nothing about the brother but the as you get a shot of this you identify that he is a bad person and a criminal.

Evaluation - Part One

The brief that we where given was the Film 4 has asked us to make a new British Social Realism film that was aimed for people aged 16-24. We had to give the first tow minutes of what our film would be like and it had to; provide a clear sense of the graphical, editing and musical style your film will use. To protect Film 4’s reputation as a leader in British cinema the film must conform to the conventions of the Social Realist genre, and meet all audience expectations for this type of film. Finally, to keep costs low, all visual and audio material used in the film must be entirely original, with the exception of stock sound effects.

The title of our film me and my partner Delon made is called 'Choices'. We decided you use this title as it gives the audience a clear meaning of what is going to happen in our film. As we said on the treatment we thought that the title was quite fitting as we thought it had a real sense of ambiguity and connoted to our audience the possible themes that would happen and would involve the story life of the protagonist making choices. This then brings then feeling of enigma running through the film as you wonder what choices he has to make.

In our opening sequence it starts off which establishing shot of the area so the audience can get a feel of how the area is. I then starts off with Kaden laying down showing he is a typical teenager who is being lazy, he then gets up to see his brother cleaning a knife that had blood all over it. This the brings enigma to the audience as you do not see his face and the audience begin to wonder why was there blood on the knife. Kaden then goes out and finds his brother's , gang members smoking. As they have asked Kaden to be doing deals with drugs but Kaden has not been doing that they then start to get angry and start chasing him through the park. It then stops there so the audience want to know what happens to Kaden after the opening sequence.

The theme that we got from the vox pop's was to include violence as this is what the target audience like to see. They did not want it to be overly violent as they said they wanted it to be realistic. From this feedback we decided to show violence when Kaden's brother is cleaning the knife that has blood on it. This denotes to the audience that Kaden's brother has been involved with criminal behavioral. The other themes that were used where corruption of youth for Kaden who is growing up in a bad area and the gang is trying to make him sell drugs. Other themes was aspritation and escape as Kaden does not want to live this life anymore, poverty at the start of the scene as it shows in the room and petty crime as there asking Kaden to sell drugs.

Production Log - Week 18

Over all I believe that I executed my production successfully as we completed what the breif wanted us to do. Most of the times we kept to our deadlines as a group and we also added a range of media techiques in our production to make it more effective to fit into a British Social Realism.
I believe that I contributed well with my partner as we both done a lot to make the film how it is. I shot a lot of the shots as my patner was part of the film. We both worked equally on the planning and editing for the film and because of this I believe that me and my partner was a succesful group as we both had a contribution.
I believe that me and my partner was successful as we previously worked together with another piece of work we knew what it would be like to work with each other. As we get along there was not any issue with that. We was a good group as we kept up to date with most of our planning that we had to do. At the start we found it difficult to find day which we was both free to shoot our film. We eventually on the next week found dates that we both could do.
The key strength of the process was our editing. I believe that the editing was very accurate most of the times as we had to cut a lot of the film down to fit into 2 minutes. From this we made sure that our match on action was accurate while editing. We also had a wide range of shots to include that was very effective as it made it feel more realistic and brought more to the opening sequence. We used close up to show the important part of the scene like when Kalen's brother was cleaning to knife.
I think next time I shoot to improve on my production process I will make sure that i contribute more idea to the film. Also I would give my self more time to complete the work by trying to complete it at the start instead of leaving it to the last day.

Production Log - Week 17

The sounding that we done was made by Delon as he makes music. We decied that we wanted the music to be a calm pace at the start of the film as this would set the mood as Kalen just woke up. The music then got more upbeat as the opening sequence carried on. As Kalen put his head phone back in his ears the music turned up to make it more effective. For the outside we had to turn down all the audio in the shots where there was no talking as you would be able to hear the wind and it didn't sound good. So because of this we turned down the audio and raised the music level. The issues that we had with the music made it difficult to hear the dialogue that was used in the opening sequence. We then had to turn down the music while they spoke to make it understand for the audience to hear the what the actors where saying.

Production Log - Week 16

The key issue of this week was that we had during this week was that our actor could not find a time that was suitable for him to shoot for our film. We then deiced to use Delon instead of him as this was easier as we didn't need to rely on anyone to film for us. This week was productive as we shoot the shots for the outside of our scene. The weather during the week was good so we didn't have an issue with the weather but we had to make sure that we filmed between 4- 5:30 as it start to get dark very early. We got shots of how the area is by showing the police car that was outside the park. We used that to our advantage that police was there knowing that it would be good for our film. The inside shooting that we done with our old actor we discover that it was too slow and that a lot of the shots was the same and it didn't show much poverty. So when we re-filmed it we had to make sure that there was a range of shots that eshtablished the how our character is living. For example the first shot that we done showed Kalen laying this showed that he is a steyrotype of a teen as he is lazy. The room had lots of itmes on the floor that was scattered around this gave a insight of how Kalen lives.

Production Log - Week 15

The problems that me and my partner faced this week was that the shots that we had to re-shoot could not of been done that week . This was because our actors in our films and us had to prepare for mock exams that were coming up. This meant that we was focusing on our revising and there was not many times in the week that we all was free to film our piece. The weather was a issue also as when we wanted it shoot out piece the weather had to be mild to set the emotion of the scene. As we had many shots outside we did not want it to rain and that week it had been raining for a long period of  time. As we had a couple of shots that the actor was in and it was not raining we had to make sure that the fluidity of the shots was right and it was hard to shoot the outside shots for that week. Also when we wanted to finish off shooting we had to make sure that it was not too dark outside as it would be hard to see what going on in each of these shots that we done.

To over come these issues that we face we done our shooting after the exam and we picked what times we was all free so we was all able to shoot. We will done it on a time of the week where it is not raining as that would effect our shooting and we have to make sure that it is not dark outside so we have to complete it before 5 o'clock as after that time it get dark very quickly. From looking at the forecast we found out that Thursday is the best day to film.

Production Log - Week 13/14

These two week me and my partner, Delon aimed to film our all of our film during these two weeks of holiday. The first week of shooting we shot all of the shots that where inside a house so getting permission and shooting for this part of the film was easy and had no key issues with these day of shooting. The main key issues that we suffered is the whether from being bad from our outside shots and also the fact that it got dark early so it was difficult to see when shooting late so we had to make sure that we shot in the day time. Another key issue was making sure that everyone is free on the same days as some day the actor was unable to attend and other days I couldn't attend while the other could. These where the main issues even though we looked at the weather the week  before to check if the weather would be good enough. We also said that we would shoot at 4 pm not realizing that it would get overly dark and have trouble seeing what happening when we shoot. Way we overcome this is that we met up at a earlier time to get more of the work done when it was still bright outside.

Production Week - Week 12

This week me and my partner,  Delon concentrated on making the graphics for our film that we are making. We made credit of the cast in our film, directors, music by, producers and many more credits like the title of our film. The decisions that we decided to think of in our film is how other British Social Realism film focuses on the credit. As we saw it other film like This is England we had decided to make our graphics basic like the graphics in this film. We made the writing white and had included capital letter for the person name so that it would stand out. Most of the graphics would go on into the corner of the film so that it does not take away took much focus on the film but it was there and it was something that the audience could see at the same time. At the end of the film we decided to make the film title 'Choice' have white writing while the background of the on this part black. This would connote to the contrast in the film and the two opposite end that the young boy Kaden has to choose from. Also we made the writing have chipped off connoting that the characters in our film never had a perfect life.
